About Angela

The sea

I feel privileged to have lived on Guernsey for most of my life and to be surrounded by such a variety of natural inspiration.  It is a delight to go walking through the little lanes brimming with hedgerows full of colour and pattern and to discover surprises around every corner whether an unexpected distant view, cute animal or a delightful piece of architecture.  The changing seasons bring additional interest by way of colour and vegetation - even if it’s something which has faded and left an interesting space!

Heading South

Wherever, inspiration is not far away; there is often a mass of pattern and structure to be wondered at by simply looking upwards and admiring the sky!  The colours and patterns are awesome and something I never tire of painting.

Do I walk to gain inspiration for a painting or do I paint to give me an excuse to walk?

More often than not the ineffable pull of the coast works its magic and I will end up on a beach!

High tide or low?

Winter or summer?

Vazon or Petit Port?

Rough or calm?

None of these matter as there is joy in each.  The harbour is such a sight when it is ‘spilling over’ but a long walk at low tide on a deserted beach is so good for the soul!  Patterns exposed in the sand by the retreating tide fascinate me endlessly.  Seaweed, shells, birds and boats are all wonderful subjects for painting, not only in their own right but also as inspiration for abstract works.

I have always been ‘creative’ but just recently have allowed myself more time for painting and now have a dedicated space at home where I can make and leave a mess!  I collect sketches and photos of my subjects but will usually finish a painting in my art room.  My go to medium is watercolour but I enjoy experimenting with other materials and particularly using mixed media.  Every sketch or painting
teaches me something new and this makes the creation of artwork a constantly evolving and
very exciting journey.

Guernsey offers no end of inspirational subjects but I hope there is a little more to my artworks than simply recreating a scene and that they embrace and convey something of the unique essence of the Bailiwick for you.

Please enjoy!
